BCATS is home to the Learning And School Readiness programs where skills are taught in a group setting to facilitate their generalization to a school setting. We employ the principles of ABA to achieve this.
The programs were developed in 1999 when it was found that children had difficulty transitioning from individual therapy to learning in group sizes of 16 to 30. They found it difficult to cope with the sudden requirement to wait, attend and listen for a much longer duration than they were used to in individual therapy. This often resulted in the children engaging in inappropriate and disruptive behaviours to engage themselves instead of participating meaningfully in the group activities.
The LASR programs were designed to target many skills throughout the day, from language and academic concepts to appropriate social interaction and play - all within a group setting. We also train self-help skills to ensure that the children are able to be independent when individual adult supervision is not always available. Our core programs run daily to ensure that there are many opportunities to learn and consistently practice different skills throughout the session. Children who have gained admission to schools are moved on to the support program where they spend a few times a week with us to hone their social skills and work on independent study skills if they have homework to complete.
If you have any questions on how we can help your child, contact us and we will be happy to discuss them with you.
